A grand antique Victorian Albert chain made up of sterling silver curb links that graduate in size from the clasps down toward a T-bar at the bottom. Each is stamped with a sterling lion mark and gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold.
Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort in the 19th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first world war who wore the chains as a keepsake.
It's a solid chain with a good weight and bears Birmingham hallmarks dating to 1886, with a newer T-bar added over the time.
